Andy was the Art Director on films such as Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Golden Compass, and Captain America: The First Avenger.
\n
His role as a Production Designer has included films such as Gravity, Divergent, and Assassin’s Creed. Andy was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.
\n
Production Designers are a key creative leader of the art team, working with the films Director and Producers to craft the look of the film. According to his website, Andy is ‘actively seeking to assimilate digital technology with traditional work-flows and techniques’. His bio goes on to say he is ‘Always on the lookout for staff with new skills’ and ‘[he is] an advocate of immersive design and closely follows the opportunities and developments within the industry’.
\n

\n
Andy Nicholson may be a newcomer to the Jurassic team, but certainly not to the industry. Production Design on previous Jurassic films was handled by Rick Carter (Jurassic Park, The Lost World) and Ed Verreaux (Jurassic Park 3, Jurassic World). This will be the first time Andy and Juan Antonio Bayona have worked together; Bayona has previously worked with Eugenio Caballero (The Impossible, A Monster Calls) and Josep Rosell (The Orphanage).
\n

\n
Personally, I love the movie ‘Gravity’ – it blends practical and CG effects in stunning ways, and I cannot wait to see what Andy brings to the table with Jurassic. It’s no wonder why any movie would want to film there, especially one featuring majestic and terrifying dinosaurs. However, the picturesque landscape may not be part of the equation at all. Wales is also home to its own Pinewood Studios lot.
\n
Pinewood Studio Wales includes:
\n
\n
70,000 sq ft of shooting space, including 2 stages at 20,000 sq ft each and an additional 30,000 sq ft of shooting floor
\n
70,000 sq ft of mixed use production space, including production accommodation and modern, flexible offices and amenities
\n
Close proximity to Cardiff and a variety of stunning locations
\n
\n
We discovered Wales as one of the locations by doing some research into ‘Ancient Futures’, the Limited Company the sequel is operating from, and saw that it is registered to operate there alongside England. While I personally think this only means they’re utilizing the Pinewood Studio, I would love if they shot in the gorgeous countryside as well. The concept of the Jurassic franchise adopting an expanded canon is incredibly exciting, and I cannot wait to see how the story evolves. Here’s hoping hoping for some complex and nuanced stories coupled with kick-ass artwork.
\n
That said, it always bugs me when the Jurassic Park franchise brags about abandoning feathers. Not all Dinosaurs were feathered, but plenty were, and that’s not a bad thing. With the right art direction feathers on some new species to the franchise could look killer. Plus, adhering to modern science (with creative liberties) and depicting the dinosaurs as animals rather than monsters is a Jurassic Park staple.
\n
Be sure to check back for updates on this, in case more information arises from the panel. According to them, the creative team is gunning for a ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ type of story where the dinosaurs eventually reclaim the Earth. Oh, and they will apparently talk and wield machine guns?
\n
Here’s what their LA based source had to say:
\n

“The team at Universal feel that this rebooted Jurassic Park concept can really take things to a new level. The development team feel that a great way for the dinosaurs to be an even greater threat to the humans is for their intelligence to increase. At this stage, their plan to work on a plot where the raptors can converse with Chris’ character Owen. But while their intelligence levels are high, they are still stuck in the mindset of a little children.”
\n
“Coupled with that the military have also developed ideas for the killers to have weapons automatically fitted to their arms. But like all things the ploy will go wrong and once again Owen will have to save the world.”
\n
“These plans are being developed for the sequels as they work on wowing fans following the first film’s success. Their track record is amazing given what they did with Fast And Furious.”

\n

\n
Ok. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this news is false. Beyond it being absurd, and the type of stuff that will kill the franchise, I have some solid reasons why:
\n
First of all, the source being LA based doesn’t add up. This movies plot is under lock and key, and only a few VIP players are privy to the information surrounding it – and their HQ is situated in London. I’m having a tough time believing that a LA based source managed to uncover such detailed plans – and supposedly knowing how it will play into future films as well? That just reeks of assumption.
\n
Further, while next to nothing is known about the plot, Colin Trevorrow has suggested it may be moving away from the militarization of Dinosaurs. Speaking to Wired, he had this to say:
\n

“I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy.”

\n
The latter part of that quote suggests a different direction for the story, considering the weaponization aspect was already explored in Jurassic World.
\n
Assuming there is some validity to the source and the report, I do have a theory on what caused it. The 2017 merchandise theme for Jurassic World is ‘Raptor Squad’ – much like ‘Dino Hybrid’ for 2016, this is a shared branding theme for license partners.
\n

A small glimpse at ‘Raptor Squad’ merchandise from Licensing Expo 2016

\n
Essentially, the idea is that toys, clothes, and other merchandise can share a unified creative theme even when there are no new films for basis. The concept – which shares a lot in common with the rumor above – was developed in house at Universal by their brand division, who were not privileged to Jurassic World 2 story beats during its creation. Coincidentally, this team operates out of LA – the alleged origin of the rumor above.
\n
On that note: the albino Velociraptor with the DBZ style ‘Scouter Visor’ is kinda awesome. I don’t really want to see that in the movies, but it would make a fun toy! Just don’t permanently weld it to the toy, dinosaurs without gear are the best kind of dinosaur. But I digress, let’s wrap this up.
\n
Long story short: put down the torches and pitchforks, and call off the ACU. I think we’re safe.. for now.
\n
Source: Dish Nation
\n","excerpt":"
Everyone. For me, it’s always about story. As long as the action sequences move the story forward, that’s what’s important.
