Would You Want to See Dr. Ellie Sattler Return to the Jurassic Park Franchise?

When thinking of iconic characters from the Jurassic Park franchise, Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm usually appear at the top of the list. The chemistry between these characters in Jurassic Park still holds it’s own as some of the best character development in the entire franchise, so it’s no surprise that many people want to see these characters return.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Laura Dern spoke about how she landed her role as paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler in the first movie. With an Oscar nomination for Rambling Rose under her belt, the offers for films were beginning to roll in. After being offered to star in Jurassic Park, Laura Dern spoke with her Wild at Heart co-star Nicolas Cage who insisted she take the role.

“I remember telling Steven I had to do the movie, because Nic told me he’s always wanted dinosaurs to be his costars.”

A fun piece of trivia for sure, and I don’t think there’s anybody who would have suited the role more than Laura Dern. As EW state, her role became an essential part of the blockbuster hit’s cult fandom, and led to one of the most quotable moments in that most quotable of films: “Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the Earth.”

When speaking about the character and future sequels, Dern replied:

“As I said to the people who are making the new series, ‘If you guys make a last one, you gotta let Ellie Sattler come back. She’s always the one who’s saving the day, man!”

Ellie Sattler briefly appeared in Jurassic Park 3, but perhaps that won’t be her last appearance in the franchise? Would you like to see the paleobotanist return in Jurassic World 3?

I have always found it interesting that in the 14 years that Jurassic Park 4 was in development hell, many of the original cast members claimed to have been called by Steven Spielberg himself about returning in the “next Jurassic”. In 2007, Laura Dern hinted that Spielberg had given her the call:

“I’m told its happening and I’m told they’re calling me. I’m told that Ellie Sattler is involved in it. I think they want to release it in 2008. Well a certain fellow is the one that called me and it’s hard to say no to him cause he’s always got something totally genius up his sleeve so we’ll see what they have in mind.”

At some point during it’s development, Ellie Sattler was involved. It was never clear in what capacity and perhaps we will never know, but maybe now is the time for her to reprise her role!

  1. I think bringing back the original three (Grant, Malcolm and Sattler) in the last film of the Jurassic World trilogy would be pretty neat. Of course it all depends on where the story goes, seeing as we barely know where Jurassic World 2 is going to go.

  2. I would love to see all original leading protagonists (Sattler, Grant, and Malcolm) return in the sequels. However, I think the key to bringing them back is to space out their return. For example, have Ian Malcolm return for JW2, then at the end of the movie, tease the return of Ellie Sattler and Alan Grant, and ultimately bring them back for JW3.

I think as far as nostalgia goes with the JW series, the old park was already brought back, Hammond was referenced, Wu returned, the original T-Rex was brought back, et cetera – plenty has been done already. Spacing the characters’ return out over the course of the two movies would ensure the nostalgia factor remains at a high point throughout the rest of the series!

  3. I think the way that Disney has handled the original Star Wras trilogy characters in its sequel trilogy is a pretty solid strategy to mirror–keep the focus on the new characters, while allowing the original trilogy characters to act as side-characters. I think Malcolm, Grant, and Sattler all returning in similar roles could be very cool.

  4. Of course I want to see the original characters come back. These characters are ultimately important to the Jurassic Park story since they were involved in the beginning. Ultimately I was disappointed when the trio didn’t have some role in Jurassic World. While they didn’t need to be main characters on the island, they could at the very least have scenes off the island where they’re giving their input on Jurassic World. I don’t know, something felt missing without them. The point I’m trying to make is I feel at least one of the characters should appear in the new films. It’s kinda like Star Wars. The new film probably wouldn’t been as good without the original characters to guide the way. Same with these new movies.

  5. I know people are against bringing old characters back, but I agree with Dern – let them come back for the final film. They don’t need to be central protagonists, but let them have some sort of role. Strange thing is, I would also prefer Ellie come back over Grant or Malcolm, as she’s only had one encounter with dinosaurs and it would be interesting to explore her character’s reaction to having a run-in with them again.

  6. I would love to see Ellie come back (along with Alan, Malcolm and even Sarah) but is just depends of what happens in the sequel. Like what other people have said, Ellie and the others don’t have to be a major part of the film but in a capacity which helps the plot line move along. However I have a strange feeling more old characters may return in JW2.

  7. That entirely depends on how useful the character is in the narrative. Grant’ role in JP3 was kinda hammed in since his usefulness mostly boiled down to his knowledge of dinosaur genera in the fossil record. Malcolm can recognize patterns and predict outcomes. Sattler has connections to the government(?). Since Raptors and the T.rex are just about the only species of living ones all three have ever encountered their expertise with other species is rather limited(even less so with genetically enhanced ones). So the best way of having them involved is through short cameos where they give their opinions about the present happenings, a voice of reason warning everyone about what is to come. That’s about it, sadly.

  8. As in, I meant the only living carnivores since theropods seem to be the greatest threat to humans in the franchise.

  9. It’s easy to get excited about something like this on a visceral level but I wonder how many people have thought it through.

Giving these characters cameo roles would amount to fanservice and it’d be unlikely that Grant, Ellie, or Malcolm wound realistically want anything to do with dinosaurs (enough to warrant full-fledged roles).

If their inclusion fits the story in a logical way (without shoehorning them in to appease fans, and without altering the planned course of the story just so they can be there), by all means bring them in. But squeezing them in just because it makes the fans’ nipples hard – nah.

TL;DR: They should only be in the movies if Trevorrow’s original outline for the second trilogy has that element built into the story, and based on current evidence we have to assume it didn’t.

  10. I don’t think bringing them back was the plan because then they would have written the story that way for the new trilogy. Unlike the makers of STar Wars, here the writers, directors and producers don’t feel the need to include characters that were so loved by fans! The might think most fans only think of dinosaurs when they think of JP. That’s wrong! Jurssic Park is as much about Alan Grant, Ellie, Malcolm and Hammond as the dinosaurs. That is how the trilogy was made and that’s what stays with us fans. They were given enough importance for us to want them back after almost 2.5 decades.

  11. I’m not going to write down any long paragraph on this, so all I have to say is that they should bring back Grant, Malcolm, and Sattler…so, yeah.

  12. Yeah I would love for them to return. Grant, Satler and Malcolm. But like someone else already said. Wouldn’t mind seeing Sarah either.
